TOEFL score converter: 1–6 band ↔ 0–120

From January 2026 the TOEFL iBT® test reports a 1–6 band score. During the transition through January 2028, reports also show one comparable overall 0–120 estimate. Convert either way below — and see both the historical concordance range and the midpoint estimate used for current-report comparison.

ETS's historical concordance maps a band to a range. A current score report instead shows one comparable overall 0–120 estimate representing the midpoint of the corresponding total range. Midpoints ending in .5 are shown here rounded to the nearest whole point. Universities set their own entry requirements — always check what your target institution asks for.

Common questions

What is a band 4 equal to?

72–85 in ETS's historical overall-score concordance, with a midpoint of about 79, and CEFR B2 (upper-intermediate). Your programme may set its minimum anywhere it chooses, so use its published requirement.

Which score will my university want?

Institutions are moving to the 1–6 scale at different times, and some still publish requirements on the 0–120 scale. During the transition your report includes both the 1–6 result and a comparable overall 0–120 estimate, so compare the format the institution lists and confirm any ambiguity directly with it.

Are section scores converted the same way?

The concordance above is for the overall score. Current sections are reported on the 1–6 band scale; current reports do not add comparable 0–30 section scores. ETS separately publishes historical section ranges for comparing results from tests taken before 21 January 2026.
