The TOEFL iBT® Speaking section (2026)
Speaking is the fourth and final section: 11 items, linear, and about 8 minutes. It measures both foundational speech skills and your ability to communicate. Below is how the section works and its two task types — then try it in a free full-length mock.

How the section works
Speaking is linear — the tasks don't adapt. It pairs a task that measures foundational skills (processing and reproducing speech accurately) with one that measures communicative ability (speaking about your experiences and opinions in a simulated conversation).

Listen and Repeat
Repeat seven spoken sentences within a scenario; sentences get progressively longer. You have 8–12 seconds per sentence, and are scored on accurate, intelligible repetition.
