The TOEFL iBT® Writing section (2026)
Writing is the third section: 12 items, linear (everyone taking a form gets the same tasks), and about 23 minutes. The old integrated and independent essays are gone. Below is how the section works and its three task types — then try it in a free full-length mock.

How the section works
Unlike Reading and Listening, Writing is linear — it does not adapt, so every test taker of a given form receives the same tasks. It mixes a controlled grammar task (Build a Sentence) with two open, communicative writing tasks that replace the old essays.
